Israel furious over inclusion on UN sexual violence list

West Jerusalem has denounced the move as a “blood libel” and severed ties with UN chief Antonio Guterres
The United Nations has added Israel to its list of parties accused of sexual violence in conflict zones, Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said on Thursday, denouncing the move as a political attack and accusing the organization of spreading blood libels.
While the designation has not yet been formally announced by the organization, Israel’s official UN account said on X that the chief of staff to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had informed Danon of the decision to place Israel and its security services on the UN’s blacklist regarding sexual violence in conflict zones – the same list as Hamas’s October 7 terrorists.
Danon said on X that Israel had submitted evidence, documents, and detailed responses to every claim, and had invited UN representatives to examine the allegations on the ground, but that they chose not to do so.
In a video address, he described the decision to include Israel in the Conflict-Related Sexual Violence (CRSV) report as outrageous, accusing Guterres and his team of spreading lies against Israel.
To put us and Hamas terrorists on the same list, that’s unacceptable, he said, adding that Israel is done with this Secretary General and will be suspending relations with Guterres’ office.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry has also decried the shameful and absurd UN decision, accusing the organization of long-standing, institutionalized hostility toward Israel. The ministry confirmed that West Jerusalem will sever all ties with Guterres’ office and will wait until a new UN Secretary-General is appointed.
The blacklist designation follows a series of sexual assault allegations against Israeli forces and prison authorities. The New York Times recently published a report detailing allegations of sexual violence by Israeli soldiers, settlers, interrogators, and prison guards against Palestinians.
Earlier this week, Australian activists detained during Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla also accused Israeli forces of rape, sexual assault, beatings, humiliation, and torture.
On Tuesday, the Canadian government demanded an independent investigation into Israel’s appalling treatment of the activists and said it had provided West Jerusalem with evidence of abuse against detainees, expecting those responsible to be held accountable.
Israel has denied the accusations, insisting it treats detainees appropriately.
